What is Counselling/therapy?

What is Counselling?

Counselling (or Therapy) is a temporary and short-term alliance between you and your counsellor to: (1) Provide you with a safe and attentive environment where you can talk about your deepest concerns without worrying about judgement, unwanted advice or social reciprocity, and to (2) Help you approach and work on your problems in a systematic and structured manner.

How long does counselling/therapy last?

How long does it last?

Counselling is a process of learning and building new effective coping skills and healthier instincts, which require sufficient momentum to become long-lasting. At the same time, this process is meant to be temporary. Therefore, with us, a typical run of counselling is a minimum of 5 sessions (weekly) and a maximum of 10 sessions.

What can you expect from counselling/therapy?

What can you expect?

It is very important to note that counselling isn't a quick-magical solution. It involves a lot of trial and error and a great deal of commitment to change. Effectively, it is an active phase of training in a supportive environment to develop better habits and patterns which eventually turn into better instincts. Therefore, counselling comes with no guarantees. The results of this process depend on how much consistent effort you put into it, both with your counsellor and by yourself. Thus, homework is a major part of the process and crucial to build and preserve momentum. Counselling needs to be viewed as an investment you are making into yourself, the benefits of which you will likely reap your whole life.

THE COUNSELLING COMPARISON

Counselling & Therapy

Friends & Family

Everything is always about you.

No interruptions, judgement, unwanted advice,
or need for social reciprocity.

Your needs are always considered.

You'll be working with a qualified professional who
is trained to help you with your mental health needs.

Counselling is always confidential and private.

Your counsellor is a stranger and thus never has a personal stake in your choices and decisions.

Counselling is a therapeutic resource to help you manage and counter your problems.

Things are about others most of the time.

People often tend to interrupt, judge, give
unwanted advice, and require reciprocity.

Your needs are often ignored.

Family and friends are generally ignorant and unskilled about people's mental health needs.

Social conversations are never confidential or private.

Friends and family almost always have a personal stake in your choices and decisions.

Friends and family might themselves be a source of stress, anxiety and other emotional disturbances.

ABOUT THE COUNSELLOR

Puneet Agrawal (Psychologist / Counsellor)

Puneet Agrawal
Founder & Psychologist, M.A.

Hello,

Let me tell you a little about myself. I have a masters in psychology and I have been practicing as a psychologist for almost five years. I primarily help clients learn how to work through negative-intrusive thoughts and emotions, how to overcome stress, anxiety and depression, and how to have a more fulfilling relationship both with themselves and others.

My preferred approaches to therapy are:

  1. Cognitive - Behavioral ~ learning to regulate emotions and manage stress, anxiety, etc. through managing thoughts and changing habits.

  2. Humanistic / Person Centered ~ learning to love yourself in a supportive and judgement-free environment.

I believe that therapy is a temporary space designed for a very specific purpose. Keeping to that, I offer relatively short counselling runs involving REBT and SFBT therapies at discounted rates for uninterrupted weekly visits.

I believe that therapy is always temporary and short-term, but the self-work and insights one learns through it are life-long. So, invest in yourself today! You're worth it.
