Mindfulness DBT Skills

STAGE 1
Mindfulness
SKILLS

In our day-to-day culture, at least the concept of Mindfulness has become well-known and is generally regarded as a goal in itself that is supposed to bring about a sense of calmness to our mind and our life.

In DBT, however, Mindfulness is only the first step to enable us to build acceptance towards our present circumstances. This in turn creates a receptive mental state to learn further skills to eventually achieve a much more powerful peace of mind.

Distress Tolerance DBT Skills

STAGE 2
Distress Tolererance
SKILLS

Stress is an unavoidable part of life that cannot be entirely eliminated. Therefore, our objective is not to eradicate stress, which would be futile, but to learn to manage and counter it.

Distress Tolerance involves skills to build resilience against our stresses by learning a few self-management strategies.

This, together with Mindfulness, further strengthens our sense of acceptance and creates a solid mental foundation to intentionally change and improve our life.

Some of the skills you'll learn in this stage might or might not be familiar to you.

STAGE 3
Emotional Regulation
SKILLS

This is where things switch into high-gear.

Now that we have sufficient Mindfulness and Distress Tolerance skills, we are finally open to an immense amount of self-awareness and self-understanding.

Emotional Regulation skills are crucial in learning to manage and reframe our thoughts and emotions, and undoing certain harmful patterns that prevent us from making effective changes that will actually improve our life.

What are DBT Skills?

What are DBT Skills?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is an elaborate process of understanding and learning four particular set of skills designed to bring about acceptance and change. Whether as part of DBT Therapy, or even on their own, these skills are one of the best ways to achieve an exceptional peace of mind.

These four skills are detailed below.

How long would DBT programme last?

How long would it last?

There is only so much you can absorb by participating in these group sessions. In order to truly develop these skills, you need to actively practice each of them outside of sessions for at least a week. Therefore, considering there are a total of eighteen main sub-skills within these four broad categories, these sessions will go on for as many weeks, i.e. 18 weeks or a little over 4 months.

What can you expect from DBT programme?

What can you expect?

It is very important to note that bringing about any meaningful change into your life would require some trial and error and a great deal of commitment to learn and change. This process is designed to help you develop better habits and patterns which eventually turn into better instincts. But the real work has to be done by you. Therefore, this process comes with no guarantees. The results of this process would depend on how much consistent effort you put into it outside of sessions by yourself. Homework is a major part of this process and crucial to build and preserve momentum. This process needs to be viewed as an investment you are making into yourself, the benefits of which you'll likely reap your whole life.

Puneet Agrawal (Psychologist / Counsellor)

Hi There,

Welcome to The Way Inward Emotional Healthcare.

Let me tell you a little about myself. With a Masters in Psychology, I have been practicing as a Counselling Psychologist for almost 5 years. I work with ages 15-60 and primarily help clients learn how to work through negative-intrusive thoughts and emotions, how to overcome stress, anxiety and depression, and how to have a more fulfilling relationship both with themselves and others.

My preferred approaches to therapy are

1. Cognitive - Behavioral ~ learning to regulate emotions and manage stress, anxiety, etc. through managing thoughts and changing habits.

2. Humanistic / Person Centered ~ learning to love yourself in a supportive and judgement-free environment.

I believe that therapy is always temporary and short-term, but the self-work and insights one learns through it are life-long. So, invest in yourself today. You're worth it!
